~ Our next Speaker's webinar is planned for January, 2025. James C. O'Connell, Ph.D. is on the faculty in Boston University's City Planning & Urban Affairs Program. He has written several books on urban history. He will present his fascinating and entertaining research on Dining Out in Boston: A Culinary History, about two centuries of the evolution of restaurants in North America, with concentration on the Greater Boston area. Registration announcement with exact day and time will be distributed later.

~ Planning is underway for an all-class Luncheon in early Spring in the Greater Boston area. Stay tuned for further information.

~ Please let us know if you are planning a regional event or class reunion. We can help by providing your contact information for alums to reach you. Consider lunches, theater and museum outings, golf, cocktail parties and other themes.

Recent Webinars

Laura Blankenship, Ph.D., Interim Director of Professional Learning at the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools gave two presentations about girls' high schools. On October 1, 2024, she discussed "The History and State of All-Girls Schools". We at GLS knew well about Title IX and the mandate for co-educational public schools. From Laura, we learned about the resurgence of all-girls public schools. On October 29, 2024, she discussed "Current Research on All-Girls Schools" and the impact of co-education on STEM learning. Thank you, Dr. Blankenship, for these informative presentations. Recordings are available at the GLSAA website in the News section.

Celebrating Veterans

Veterans Day is Monday, November 11, 2024. Thank You to All GLS Alumnae Who Served.

We were informed of the following.

Lieutenant (j.g.) Mary [Bishop] Manning,

GLS 1962, became a Nurse, serving in the US Navy Reserve, stationed at Pensacola Naval Air Station and Chelsea Naval Hospital.

,

Lt. Commander Karen Greaney, GLS 1971, became a Nurse in the US Navy Reserve, serving 1975-1994. She was on active duty 1976-1978 in Newport RI and at the Philadelphia Naval Regional Medical Center. Subsequently, she was a nurse in the Veterans Administration for 25 years.

Captain Dorothy [Aberlin] Abel, GLS 1962, served in the US Marine Corps, mainly in the western US.

Edith Haynes, GLS 1962, served in the US Navy.

Captain Elena Haynes, GLS 1962, served in the Nurse Corps in Bethesda MD.

Eva Marie [Redd] Hornsby, GLS 1962, served in the US Navy and in the US Navy Reserve

Captain Gail [Philbrook] Rosenberg, GLS 1964, Nurse, US Army, 4 years, Fort Fortmonmouth, Eatontown NJ.  She is now deceased; the data were kindly provided by Claudia Deering, GLS 1964.

Major Janet [Callahan] Paninski, GLS 1970, served as a Nurse Anesthetist, US Army, 1972-1992.

Heidi Kniupis, GLS 1974, served in the US Air Force as a flight instructor in the 96th Flying Training Squadron at the former Williams Air Force Base in Maricopa County, Arizona. She was killed on August 7, 1982 in a crash landing in Riverside, California while on a training flight with a student flier. She was 25 years old. Friends and witnesses said that “she did everything possible to avoid crashing into a base housing development and a swimming pool with about 90 persons in it”. Those of us who knew Heidi have no doubt that concern for the safety of others would have been her last thoughts and actions. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/120960574/heidi_marie-kniupis (Photo was downloaded from the link.)

Captain Dorette [Gelzinis] Markham, GLS 1962, served in the Women’s Army Corps for 4 years in Fort McClellan, AL and Fort Shafter HI. She received the Army Commendation Medal. (Note the WAC insignia of Pallas Athene on her left collar.)

Dorette [Gelzinis] Markham, GLS 1962, has served veterans as well. She was chosen for the 2023 Puget Sound Honor Flight, with celebratory weekend events in Washington DC centered around the memorials built to honor veterans. At the Military Women’s Memorial in Arlington Cemetery, Dorette was singled out for a surprise award recognizing her specific efforts to make that Memorial a reality. Dorette launched another initiative to acknowledge women’s roles in the military that resulted in a state-wide (WA) declaration for every June 14 now to be known as Women Veterans Day. At the more local level, she guided an effort to construct a magnificent Memorial Plaza to honor veterans in her city, University Place WA. In addition, Dorette has done endless volunteer work for veterans through her local Chapter of the WAC Veterans Association. She participates in monthly Chapter meetings to arrange visits to, and to assemble holiday gift bags for veterans residing in veterans’ homes, and to coordinate attendance at funerals.
